EAA Chapter 322 breakfast fly away to Krugersdorp By Willie Bodenstein 19.03.2023 On Saturday 18 March 2023 the Krugersdorp Flying Club based at Jack Taylor hosted Chapter 322 of the Experimental Aircraft Association of South Africa for its monthly breakfast fly away. Jack Taylor Airfield (S26 04' 54" E27 43' 32, frequency 122.0, altitude 5,499 feet), is sometimes referred to as HMS Krugersdorp because of its 970m x 29m tar runway. Overshoot on 26 and you'll end up in the nature reserve to be eaten by the lions. Overshoot on 08 and you'll end up in the poo as the sewage treatment works will await you. Just joking! Please don't take me seriously! Lancairs, Aerocomanders, Harvard's and others are based at the field. Krugersdorp Flying Club is certainly one of South Africa's most active flying clubs with 137 aircraft, 113 hangars and more than 268 active members and is still growing by the day. The weather on Saturday was perfect for flying as Captain Karl Jensen, Graham Richardson and yours truly departed from Fly in Estates in ZU-VAL, Karl's immaculate Cessna 170 for the approximately twenty-minute flight from east to west via the Pinedene route. I didn't count the number of visiting aircraft when we landed but estimate that probably approximately twenty visited. Johan, who runs the restaurant in the clubhouse told me that he had served sixty breakfasts. We spend a pleasant morning catching with friends before departing. The next Chapter 322 event that will include a car boot sale is planned for 1 April at the EAA Auditorium at Rand Airport. The next fly away will be to Brits Airfield on the 15 April 2023.
